LEAF Funding

The government has just announced a £10 million funding pot called LEAF (Local Energy Assessment Fund). This funding is open to community groups and parish councils but needs to be spent by 31st March 2012. DECC describes the fund as being designed to help communities to accelerate their activity on energy and climate change. It can pay for:

·         energy surveys of buildings

·         energy saving demonstration projects (exemplar homes or community spaces)

·         workshops to help local people take action to save energy

·         reports on what more needs to be done in your area (in the way of energy efficiency)

·         engagement events ahead of the above studies to generate interest

Where the above has already been done the funding may be able to facilitate:

·         area-wide renewable energy studies (to see what would work)

·         feasibility studies into specific renewable energy projects

The money is not available for installing technologies which would benefit from Feed in Tariffs or the Renewable Heat Incentive, but could be used for studies into whether those technologies would be suitable.

Shortstown residents acted pretty well to available schemes like cavity and loft insulation but there are still homes where no improvement was carried out. The above money could be used to asses how green Shortstown is in comparison to national average and pinpoint the areas where our residents need the most help. Yet this decision is in hands of our councillors.

Advocacy for Older People are recruiting volunteers

Advocacy for Older People is a free and confidential service which helps older people to solve all sorts of problems by accessing services, advice and information on their behalf. We help people who are about to make a major change in their lives and need help to understand what choices are available to them, or people who have difficulty resolving problems due to advanced age, illness, bereavement, or people who simply don’t know how to find the service that they need.

Advocacy support is both practical and personal, Advocates take time to talk to their client, to really listen to what they are saying and to make sure that their wishes are heard.

You could be part of our team of Advocates, working in the general community or in specialised areas such as dementia, mental health and safeguarding vulnerable adults. Being an Advocate gives you the opportunity to use the experience you already have, to learn many new skills, and to develop valuable work experience.

You will befully supported with regular training and supervision, and all expenses are paid. Our office is based in Bedford, but we have Advocates working all over Bedfordshire and Luton.

For an information pack on how we make a difference to the quality of life of an older person and for really rewarding voluntary work please contact June on 01234 218880.

“I’m so pleased with everything you
did. I’m very happy you were able to help and I don’t know what would have
happened without you.”
