This article is over one year old, yet so many above comments over last three days. Firstly I have suspected activists but checking all ip numbers and names (not all are true, first name mostly are) I've allowed all. This topic brings lots of emotions and anger from residents of Stewartby and their supporters. The above article presents the whole situation from the point of view of Mechanical Engineer who is completely unbiased.

Will the author of this and his supporters live in the shadow of the incinerator smoke/emissions? I know the brickwork chimneys' emissions affected people as far away as Wilstead, being higher the Covanta incinerator emissions will spread further depending on weather and wind conditions but certainly we can expect the effects to effect most people within a 10 mile radius at some point every year.

Mr Morris,
Yet another person who can see the benefits of rubbish being taken away from their overflowing un-sorted bin to be burned in someone else's "back-yard".. Amazing how the people of the Marston Vale don't share your delight: oh well that clearly makes them NIMBYs doesn't it?? Aren't they lucky they don't have a land-fill instead?
What a sadly inaccurate, uninformed and biased article you have written.
Stewartby is only a few miles from Shortstown, and although it's residents may be just far enough away from our existing land-fill sites (oh, didn't you notice that we already have more than our fair share of those) it is unlikely that they will be far enough from the Rookery Pit site to not have to share our polluted air if and when the incinerator is built.
A man who has studied incinerators in much more depth than yourself took the time to fly over from America to lecture us in the dangers of the emissions and resulting ashes of what Covanta like to call their "Energy from Waste Plant", Professor Paul Connett is one of the world's leading experts in waste management, in particular dioxins and zero waste. He is Professor of Chemistry atnd New York's St Lawrence University and Executive Director of the American Environmental Health Studies Project.
I could go on for ages about what he says, but why not just listen to him yourself by following this link and playing the videos. You will see not only the dangers of incineration but also that there are more than your two ways of disposing of waste and the third option is far better for all of us. [http://www.bigpicture.tv/?id=1639]
We are not NIMBYs Mr Morris, unless you count the whole world as our back yard.. Why should Stewartby suffer as Lucca in Tuscany did recently? Just because you can't be bothered to sort your trash..
Zero Waste is the next step, not incineration or land-fill. Think of the children.

I rather feel thet this piece hasn't been researched very well. I am sure that in some very small cases the use of incineration is possibly OK. I would however consider the following before welocming the company into our area.

Covanta - google the name and then add in the following words to your search criteria.

Polution
Workers rights
Court action
Dioxins
Cancer
Fines

you will find hundreds of pages telling you all about the problems they cause. One that leaps to mind is the very recent case where they were fined for poluting the atmosphere with dioxins (cancer causing particles) at a level of over 5000% above the permissable level. That really was five thousand percent and not something smaller.

Keep looking and you will find many more.

Now consider thet the prevelant wind direction will carry the polution from the incinerator (the largest in Europe if they get their way) directly over your houses and ask yourself if you might be slightly more of a NIMBY than before.

Remember that findings show incinerators do have a negative effct on health. there is loads of data out there and most of it can be provided to you by the local groups opposing this incinerator.

Covanta? Convanta - don't believe the lies!
